Andre Greipel wins Tour of Britain opening stage

Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) sprinted to victory in the opening stage of the Tour of Britain in Castle Douglas.

The German champion held off the challenge of Caleb Ewan (Orica-BikeExchange) in a sprint after being put into the perfect place by his team-mates and avoiding a nasty crash in behind.

Less than 10 riders were involved in the sprint proper, with a crash on the final corner taking out leading British sprinter Mark Cavendish (Team Dimension Data), Team Sky’s Elia Viviani and Danny van Poppel, and Dutch champion Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto NL-Jumbo).

Greipel sat in third place around the final bend and launched his sprint 200m from the finish line to win by just over a bike-length from Ewen.

“It’s really nice to start off this Tour of Britain with a victory. We have reached our goal already on the first day so anything else would be on top now,” he said.

“Today they tried to get me through that last corner and made a perfect job with only six guys, which is not easy. We managed to do that and I am really proud of the guys.”
